In the UK, with the current chilly and damp weather, short days, and ongoing cost of living crisis, many are eagerly anticipating the return of summer's warmth, extended daylight, and potential holidays.

Yet, some might be contemplating an earlier escape, with a Moroccan coastal city being a viable option. Agadir, located on Morocco's western shoreline, is roughly a five hour drive from the nation's capital, Casablanca.

Nestled near the base of the Atlas mountains, it boasts a population exceeding half a million. Its name originates from the Berber term for 'wall' or 'citadel'.

January temperatures in one of Morocco's more visually modern cities can reach a balmy 22C to 25C, offering a welcome respite from the UK's dreary winter weather.

Lonely Planet explains its contemporary appearance is due to reconstruction following a devastating earthquake in 1960 that destroyed much of the historic city.

The rebuilt city now features a fishing port, expansive beach, tree-lined streets, and all the trappings of a bustling seaside city, including the Souss-Massa National Park.

Moreover, Skyscanner suggests that return flights to the area could be snagged for as little as £28 from Manchester.

As for the optimal time to visit, Lonely Planet recommends that while Agadir enjoys a mild climate most of the year, the peak tourist season is in July and August.

The experts detailed: "Between May and September, the weather in Agadir is comparatively mild when much of the rest of Morocco is sweltering.

"Cities in the north of the country empty out over the summer holidays, with many locals hitting Morocco's southern coast, making July and August Agadir's busiest period."

Lonely Planet isn't alone in singing the praises of this coastal gem, with numerous travel bloggers championing the destination for its wallet-friendly appeal.

Among them is popular travel website The Travel Mum, which recommended exploring the historic Kasbah, taking a ride on the Agadir Cable Car, and browsing the bustling Souk el Had market.

Blogger Jenna Carr celebrated the city as an ideal winter escape, saying: "I give you a destination that you may not have considered, and explain why it will make the perfect beach holiday!".

"Agadir Morocco is a resort destination, it is known for its golf courses, golden beaches, beach side promenade and fantastic food. If that wasn't enough, it has a year round warm climate. We visited in November and enjoyed 30C sunny days all week!".
