Taylor Fritz turned down the opportunity to win $1million AUD (£500,000) at the Australian Open and immediately regretted his decision. The main draw doesn't get underway until the weekend, but some of the top talents were in action at the inaugural 1 Point Slam on Wednesday.
The concept is simple: 48 players are placed into a bracket, where they each contest just one point in a winner-stays-on style format. The field was split with men and women players, including amateurs who had earned qualification via State Championship titles.
Nick Kyrgios, Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were all in action, but the spotlight fell on amateur Jordan Smith, who went all the way to the final and banked the whopping cash prize. Dubbed a gimmick before the event, seeing the 1 Point Slam in practice certainly caught some by surprise, not least world No.9 Fritz, who took to social media to bemoan his non-participation.
Posting on X, the American remarked: "Now that I'm actually watching it on TV, massive L from me to not be playing the one point slam, this looks like so much fun [laughing emoji]."
Alcaraz, who was involved in the event, also took to social media to speak about the event, simply posting: "Jordan Smith," to his one million followers.
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, who did take part, also said: "Great event! lol I said when it started I hoped an amateur won !! Congrats Jordan. Soooo cold #1pointslam."
Smith defeated Aussie rules star Bailey Smith - no relation - in the first round, before knocking out WTA No. 200 Laura Pigossi and then beating Sinner. He kept it going with wins over Amanda Anisimova and Pedro Martinez, before facing WTA No. 117 Joanna Garland in a fairytale final.
Garland enjoyed plenty of upsets herself, beating Alexander Zverev, Nick Kyrgios, Maria Sakkari, and Donna Vekic. Before their one-point showdown in the final, Smith shared his hopes of buying a house if he won the prize money.
Speaking after, when asked about what he'd do with the prize money, he explained: "Definitely try and buy a house, the Sydney prices are expensive! Maybe half a house? Who knows, an apartment? We'll see how it goes."
Focus will soon switch to the actual competition, which kicks off on Sunday. Sinner is the pre-tournament favourite from the men's draw, while Aryna Sabalenka is being tipped to add another Grand Slam title to her collection in the women's draw.
