People with certain symptoms have been advised to stay at home due to a nasty virus rapidly spreading across England. The latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reveals a 47% surge in cases within the first fortnight of 2026.
This sharp increase has prompted the UKHSA to remind the public about essential hygiene practices that can help curb the spread of the virus. Reports indicate that norovirus cases are most prevalent among those aged 65 and over, and while the activity remains within expected parameters, there is an uptick in outbreaks within hospital settings.
The most recent surveillance data from the UKHSA also indicates a decline in flu, COVID-19, and RSV levels during the initial week of the year. Although the case numbers for all winter viruses are within the expected range for this season, the public is urged to continue implementing simple measures to maintain this downward trend.
Flu and norovirus can be unpredictable, with trends fluctuating throughout the season, hence the importance of taking straightforward steps to minimise their spread. For both respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses like norovirus, these measures include regular hand washing.
It's important to note that alcohol-based hand gels are ineffective against norovirus, so frequent handwashing with soap and warm water, combined with bleach-based cleaning products for surfaces, will help prevent the spread of infection. Ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces can also reduce the transmission of respiratory illnesses such as flu, and if you develop symptoms, remain at home where feasible.
Should you need to venture out, consider wearing a face covering, especially when visiting those who are vulnerable.
Amy Douglas, Lead Epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: "We have seen a notable increase in norovirus cases in recent weeks among those aged 65 years and over, with more hospital outbreaks also being reported. While this is still within expected levels, there are simple steps that people can take to reduce the spread of norovirus and ensure levels don't rise further.
"Washing your hands with soap and warm water and using bleach-based products to clean surfaces will also help stop infections from spreading. Alcohol gels do not kill norovirus so don't rely on these alone.
"If you have diarrhoea and vomiting, don't return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped and don't prepare food for others in that time either. If you are unwell, avoid visiting people in hospitals and care homes to prevent passing on the infection to those most vulnerable."
