A stunning island in the Canaries has flown under the radar, despite its spectacular scenery and stunning beaches. The Canary Islands are full of many popular resorts that Brits flock to every year. Mostly, tourists from the UK head to Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. However, overtourism is taking its toll on locals, many of whom have taken to the streets to protest the high levels of visitors from abroad.
Many holidaymakers are considering alternatives for their 2026 vacations, as they feel increasingly unwelcomein popular resort towns. Travel experts at Time Out have named the most underrated and overlooked winter sun destinations in a recent list, and one of the Canary Islands that enjoys 20C temperatures in January was highlighted. As well as the great weather, you have no massive crowds of visitors.
La Gomera is one of the lesser-known Canary Islands, overshadowed by nearby Tenerife, which is just 21 miles away. It is one of the smaller islands in the archipelago, with a population of only around 22,000 residents.
"While we're big fans of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, we'd urge you to instead consider La Gomera," Time Out says. If you are looking for a bit of adventure and to stretch your legs, then it is an excellent choice.
Hiking in Garajonay National Park is one of the most spectacular experiences on the island, with lush forests and peaks that give you unparalleled views of the island and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.
Taking in views from one of the island's many viewpoints, you will feel like you've stepped onto an island of Hawaii. When looking to explore, there is a 600km network of trails on the island to enjoy.
When it comes to relaxing during your holiday, you'll want to head to spots like Playa de Santiago, Valle de Hermigua and Playa La Caleta, all of which are scenic and tranquil spots by the coast.
If you are a culture vulture looking to experience something truly unique, you should listen out for locals speaking the El Silbo Gomero, a unique language that involves whistling. It is used to communicate across valleys and is truly like nothing you've heard before.
The island has a slew of resorts with pools and other essential sun holiday amenities, some of which are located close to the coast.
There are no direct flights to La Gomera, although it is still relatively easy to get to from the UK. Generally, you would fly to Tenerife and take a ferry to the smaller island.
Reviews of this underrated island in the Canary Islands are overwhelmingly positive, with people branding it "tranquil" and "a world away" from nearby Tenerife.
One review reads: "It's only when you get to somewhere like Gomera that you realise how easy it is to stereotype the Canaries. Granted, it may not be to everyone's taste (older children/teenagers might struggle), but the lack of English breakfasts, amusement arcades, nightclubs, & street sellers is truly a breath of fresh air."
Winter is warm on La Gomera, but summer is truly spectacular with highs of around 24C in August and September.
