In December 2025, there was massive chaos in air traffic due to mismanagement by IndiGo company across the country. Taking this matter seriously, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has imposed a fine of Rs 22 crore 20 lakh on the country’s largest private airline IndiGo. This strict action has been taken after serious shortcomings were found in the safety and facilities of passengers.
According to the investigation by the Directorate General, there were large-scale disruptions in IndiGo flights between 3 and 10 December 2025. During this period, more than 2,500 flights were cancelled, while more than 1,800 flights were delayed. This directly affected more than 3 lakh passengers. At many airports, passengers had to wait for hours, while some passengers remained stranded.
It has been made clear in the report that this chaos was not just due to weather or external reasons. The main reasons were deficiencies in pilot and crew management, lack of planning and preparation, as well as poor enforcement of flight time limitation rules. The situation was worsened by mistakes in staff scheduling and control systems.
Along with the fine, DGCA has ordered IndiGo to maintain a bank guarantee of Rs 50 crore so that necessary improvements can be made to avoid such incidents in future. Apart from this, some senior officials of the company have been given strict warnings and instructions have also been given to change their work responsibilities.
DGCA has made it clear that along with rapid expansion, airlines should also give equal importance to passenger safety, convenience and proper planning. Indigo has also assured to improve the system by following the orders of the regulator. This action is being considered as a warning to the entire Indian aviation sector and DGCA has given a clear message that ignoring the rights of passengers will not be tolerated.
