A stunning seaside market town has been named one of the best places in the UK for foodies. Margate is a seaside town in the Thanet District of Kent. It is located on the north coast of Kent and covers an area of two miles, 16 miles northeast of Canterbury.

The town has been a significant maritime port since the Middle Ages, and was associated with Dover as part of the Cinque Ports in the 15th century. For at least 250 years, Margate has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its beaches, owing to easy access via the Thames, and later with the arrival of the railways. Conde Nast Traveller named the town one of the "best foodie breaks in the UK", saying it is best for trendy dinners. The travel magazine said Margate has "quietly become one of the UK's coolest seaside towns, with a buzzing food scene to match". It recommended small plates across the board, but specifically wine at Sargasso or Sète, chicken Caesar focaccia at the Picnic Deli, and the custard tart at Oast. There are also upscale restaurantslike Angela's and Bottega Caruso. The charming Old Town is a treasure trove of quaint museums and eclectic boutiques, offering everything from vintage gems to contemporary finds.

Margate's Cliftonville district has been praised as one of the "coolest" in the UK, and TimeOut has listed the town as one of the top places to visit.

The town offers all the traditional coastal delights: plentiful fish and chip shops, ice cream stalls dotted along the seafront, waterside pubs, and classic crazy golf courses.

Margate Beach, particularly Margate Main Sands, is a classic, wide, sandy beach renowned for its traditional seaside attractions, including arcades, rides, and a boardwalk. It won a Seaside Award and was named a Blue Flag beach in 2025.

The quieter Walpole Bay Tidal Pool is a four-acre, Grade II-listed, tidal sea bathing pool built in 1937. The water in the pool is refreshed by the incoming tide twice a day, and fresh water springs rise from the beach within the walls.

The Shell Grotto features walls and a roof adorned with elaborate decorations of over four million shells in intricate patterns. It was rediscovered in 1835, but its age and origin remain unknown. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.

The Dreamland Amusement Park is situated in the centre of Margate. Operating since 1920, it is one of the oldest-surviving amusement parks in the UK.

Its Scenic Railway is the oldest wooden roller coaster in the UK and is now a Grade II Listed structure. It is one of only two early-20th-century scenic railways still remaining in the UK; the only other surviving UK scenic railway is in Great Yarmouth and was built in 1932.

There are two notable theatres, the Theatre Royal in Addington Street - the second oldest theatre in the country - and The Tom Thumb Theatre, the second smallest in the country.

It's hardly surprising that Margate has become a hotspot for celebrities and Londoners, who are driving up house prices.

Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot famous faces like Lily Allen, Sam Mendes, Olivia Colman, and even some cast members from EastEnders, according to KentLive.
