Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian team, and Ravindra Jadeja, the senior all-rounder all set travel to Rajkot to play the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy after India's loss against New Zealand in the 1-2 ODI Series. Both players may be asked to play against each other as Jadeja's Saurashtra takes on Shubman's Punjab at the Niranjan Shah Stadium on January 22.
Gill last played against Karnataka in the previous campaign and has not featured this season in a Ranji Trophy match. Jadeja, on the other hand, has just played one domestic match against Madhya Pradesh.
Both the teams, Saurashtra and Punjab, have just won one match each in their last five and their ranks are fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Group B points table.
Punjab and Saurashtra still have one league fixture left after this match, and since part of India's 2026 T20 World Cup squad. Hence, they both will be available for the final match, too.

Jadeja was defended by Gill for his form
Jadeja made just 43 runs in three innings at an average of 14.33, and also failed to take any wickets. Since he retired from the T20Is, he might have played his last ODI Series, too.
With the names of Axar Patel and other excellent all-rounders in the list via the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the selectors are under immense pressure to move from the 37-year-old veteran. Gill, when asked about Jadeja's form, said:
“Firstly, I think about Jaddu bhai, I don’t know how many matches he has played over the past couple of years, but in terms of his batting, he was looking in good touch."
He also added:
“That said, I think all of us batters, especially, were not able to convert the starts we got. Whenever you play in India, you usually see high-scoring matches, and if batters get starts but don’t convert them, at least two of them, it always becomes difficult."
Both players are all set to play the Ranji Trophy in their best form.
