After India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, Rahul Dravid stepped down. VVS Laxman filled in as an interim coach for the T20I series in Zimbabwe that we won 4-1. Then Gautam Gambhir officially took over for the tour of Sri Lanka. It seemed to be a dawn of a new age for Indian cricket. The man who had been part of the 2007 and 2011 T20I and ODI World Cup wins respectively was becoming our coach. Just some months back, his coaching had helped KKR win the IPL for a third time and the first time in 10 years.
Team India’s Horror Show Under Gautam GambhirBut it proved to be a false dawn. Things began to go from bad to worse in a matter of months. Team India sunk to new depths that one could not believe. Not only were we ineffective abroad but we were faltering at home too. Yes, Gambhir played an important role in winning the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in 2025, but they were just occasional blips of brilliance in a span of poor form.

Right now, it is not a good time to be Gautam Gambhir. The man is already under the scanner as being responsible for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Test retirements. Ravichandran Ashwin is believed to have left international cricket because of him and that too midway through an overseas tour. Not to mention the fact that people feel Gambhir was the one who influenced chief selector Ajit Agarkar to replace Rohit with Shubman Gill as ODI skipper and that too when Rohit had just won an ICC title. Gill also took Rohit’s place as Test captain. Another decision that Gambhir is believed to have had a hand in. He has also been accused of wanting to edge Rohit and Kohli out of the ODI side.
Cricketing Reasons Not to Like Gautam Gambhir as a CoachNow of course, this is just speculation and hating or loving him for it depends on personal outlook. But if one looks at cricketing reasons alone, there are enough reasons to dislike Gambhir as a coach. The list is long with as many as 10 reasons to not be a fan of Gambhir since he took charge in mid 2024. Let’s take a look:
