Gandhinagar. The Gujarat government is continuously promoting the use of modern technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to make the cities of the state smart and safe. Following the establishment of the AI ​​Center of Excellence in Gandhinagar under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, concrete steps are being taken towards incorporating AI in governance and civil services.

Focus on the problem of stray animals in Ahmedabad

In this series, an important pilot project has been started in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) area. The objective of this project is to effectively solve the problem of traffic obstruction and accidents caused by stray cows in the city.

Manual process was causing wastage of time and energy.

Stray cows roaming on the roads in Ahmedabad often lead to traffic jams and accidents. Till now, the Municipal Corporation team takes photographs of cows in different areas with the help of CCTV cameras and identifies them on the basis of microchips and RFID tags attached to them. The process is time consuming and laborious as it is completely manual.

AI technology will speed up the identification process

AI technology is now being incorporated to complete this entire process faster, accurately and with less resources. For this purpose, the AI ​​Center of Excellence located at GIFT City, Gandhinagar has entrusted the responsibility of developing a special AI model to an agency.

Deep learning based AI model ready

The agency has suggested a solution based on computer vision and deep learning technology. The AI ​​model developed by the agency will be presented before the steering committee soon. This model will process the images received from CCTV cameras in real-time and identify the cow and its owner.

How will the AI ​​model work?

In the proposed AI model, the cow will be identified mainly on the basis of its face and nose pattern. Just as every person's fingerprint is different, the nose pattern of every cow is also different. Along with this, the spots or marks present on the cow's eyes and face will also be scanned. Based on all these data points, the AI ​​model will identify the cow in the crowd and match it with the database and provide information about its owner.

Already existing RFID database will be used

At present, around 1.10 lakh cows in Ahmedabad are fitted with RFID tags and microchips. Their entire database is safe with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Stray cows are monitored through CCTV cameras installed at 130 major junctions of the city.

Solution will be found in traffic and security problems

If this AI based solution is successful, road accidents caused by stray cows will reduce, traffic management will improve, public safety will increase. Along with this, the government aims to strengthen the data-based monitoring system and make smart governance more effective.
