Naomi Osaka stunned spectators with a jaw-dropping walkout outfit at the Australian Open that left Tim Henman speechless. The Japanese tennis star opened up her campaign against Croatian Antonia Ruzic.
But before a ball had even been served, all eyes were on former world number one Osaka. She walked on to court wearing a wide-brimmed hat and accompanying veil, as well as a matching umbrella.
She also donned flared trousers, alongside a teal jacket and vest combo. The outfit had onlookers in the Rod Laver Arena stunned.
“It’s a vibe,” said Laura Robson, the former British No 1. “I love it, this is a moment.” When asked his opinion, Tim Henman, replied that he was “not qualified to comment”, before adding: “Wow, I am speechless. It’s pretty cool. Does it put pressure on your performance?”

Osaka has already explained that the inspiration behind her outfit was a jellyfish, having thought of the idea when reading with her daughter. Speaking to Vogue, she said: “When I look back at the players who came before me, I think about how those moments—those looks—have become memories that live forever.
“So much of the time, other people get to write our stories for us. This felt like a moment where I could write a little bit of my own.”
She enlisted the help of designer Robert Wun to bring the outfit to life. Sharing his experience, he said: “Naomi and Martin came into it with a great understanding of what my world already looks like. As a fan, I already understood her as an athlete, but being able to share this creative moment has been incredibly special.”

The drama didn’t just end with Osaka’s outfit in her opening game. Her clash with Ruzic was suspended midway through the second set after a technical fault with the net lights.
The issue caused a huge delay before both players refused to play on before it was rectified. TNT Sports commentator Naomi Broady said: "Both players understandably saying they would rather not play with the lights...
"They were turned on before the point began but I don't think either player had noticed until the point had finished."
Osaka eventually booked her spot in the second round of the competition as she beat Ruzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. She will now take on Romanian star Sorana Cîrstea in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
