Every now and then people need to take painkillers, but there are some things about the medication that they need to be aware of. Not to worry though, as a pharmacist has recently shared exactly what people need to know to avoid any major mishaps from taking place.
Pharmacist Anum opened up about the use of paracetamol, and she detailed if you should ever really take it at the same time as ibuprofen. While both forms of medication are popular, there are some crucial things you need to bear in mind before opting to take the pills, or you could face a few health consequences.
She recently detailed expert advice in a candid TikTok video where she informed people of the vital information. It's not the first warning that's been issued about taking such medication either.
Holding up the pills, the pharmacist said: "Have you ever wondered if you can take this and this together? Ibuprofen and paracetamol.
"Actually, paracetamol and ibuprofen work differently. So, paracetamol can help to target fever and pain, whereas ibuprofen can help to target fever, pain and inflammation.
"So, it can help with things like swelling. In short, you can take both together. You can take them at the same time or you can alternate them.
"Actually, this can sometimes be effective in helping to manage your pain, your fever or when you're not feeling very well. However, you must never exceed the maximum dosing of either of them, and this can be found on the packaging or by speaking to your local pharmacist."
In the caption alongside the video, she added: "Can paracetamol and ibuprofen, when used correctly, be taken together? Did you know this?
"Always stick to the recommended doses, timings and indications. Always read the patient information leaflet or speak to a pharmacist if not sure! Educational content only – not medical advice."
What you need to knowIf it's something you've always pondered over, for adults (16+) it's generally safe to take paracetamol and ibuprofen together. You can take them at the same time or spaced apart, as it can aid with better pain relief.
However, you always need to follow dosage instructions and take ibuprofen with food. Additionally, you should never exceed maximum doses.
It's also worth noting you should never combine the medication with other paracetamol or NSAID products, and speak to a GP or pharmacist if you're ever unsure what to do.
It's especially important you seek advice for children or long-term use, as they work differently and provide enhanced relief. Always bear this in mind.
Ibuprofen should never be taken with other NSAIDs (like aspirin or naproxen) as it can increase side effects. This is why it's always vital to read labels before using any new medication.
Children should only alternate doses if it's been advised by a healthcare professional. For further advice, speak to your GP or pharmacist.
