The Indian government is taking major steps to digitize agriculture, making it easier for farmers to access subsidies and resources. Earlier, the Farmer ID became mandatory to receive the next PM-Kisan installment. Now, reports suggest that this unique digital ID may also be required to purchase urea, DAP, and other fertilizers in the near future.

The objective is clear: ensure that fertilizers and subsidies reach only genuine farmers who are actively cultivating their land. Here’s everything you need to know about the Farmer ID, why it’s becoming essential for fertilizer purchases, and how to get it easily.

What Is a Digital Farmer ID?

Just like every citizen has an Aadhaar card as a proof of identity, every farmer will now have a unique digital identity called the Farmer ID. This ID is part of the AgriStack project, which will digitally store:

  • Your identity details

  • Land ownership information

  • Crops being cultivated

  • Government benefits received

This single digital record will make it easier for the government to track and assist genuine farmers efficiently.

Why Is Farmer ID Required to Buy Fertilizers?

During peak farming seasons, fertilizers often face shortages, and sometimes black marketing occurs. The Farmer ID aims to tackle these issues:

  • Verify genuine farmers: Only farmers with valid land records will be able to buy fertilizers.

  • Purchase based on need: Fertilizer allocation will match the size of your land, reducing hoarding.

  • Ensure subsidy reaches the right hands: Fertilizer subsidies will go only to eligible farmers, reducing fraudulent claims.

How to Apply for Farmer ID From Home

Good news: there’s no need to visit government offices. You can create your Farmer ID online using a mobile or computer:

  1. Visit the official portal: Go to your state’s Farmer Registry portal (e.g., mpfr.agristack.gov.in for Madhya Pradesh) or the central AgriStack portal.

  3. Aadhaar verification: Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to your linked mobile number to complete e-KYC.

  5. Upload photo and bank details: Submit a clear photo and fill in your bank account information.
