A little-known Central Asian country is a paradise for hikers and horse riders seeking dramatic landscapes far from the tourist crowds. Flights to this destination are surprisingly affordable from the UK, thanks to convenient connections through Istanbul, making it possible to combine a few days in Turkey's vibrant city with an unforgettable adventure in the mountains.

The country in question? Kyrgyzstan. Its capital, Bishkek, lies at the foot of a mountain range, meaning some of the country's most spectacular trails are just a short drive from the airport. Within an hour or two, visitors can reach national parks filled with glaciers, waterfalls, and jagged peaks. The trails range from gentle day hikes to challenging climbs, all offering panoramic views that feel untouched by hectic tourism and modern life.

Two central themes of the are immersion in the nomadic culture and horse riding. Local guides in Kyrgyzstan have been raising horses for centuries. With their help visitors can trek on horseback through alpine meadows, along turquoise lakes and travel like the nomads who have called these mountains home for generations. Many tours include overnight stays in traditional yurts, providing a chance to experience authentic culture while enjoying simple comforts amid stunning scenery.

Further afield, high-altitude lakes such as Issyk-Kul are framed by mountain trails suitable for both day trips and multi-day treks. Along the way, hikers encounter wildflowers, alpine wildlife, and scattered yurts, offering a glimpse into a way of life largely unchanged for centuries. Summer is the ideal season to visit, when valleys are vibrant with colour and temperatures remain comfortable at altitude.

Despite its remote location, the country remains affordable, especially in the context of travelling all the way to Asia. At the moment, a February return flight to Bishkek from London through Istanbul costs around £300. Even cheaper options include a 22-hour break in Istanbul, which is enough time for some tourists to explore the city.

Accommodation ranges from family-run guesthouses to yurt camps, and horse treks cost a fraction of what similar experiences elsewhere cost.

For British travellers, it is a rare opportunity to explore the unexplored beauty of nomadic Central Asia, its mountains, lakes, and traditions - all within easy reach of the capital and just a short hop from a city break in Istanbul.
