Bihar will get share in Ganga water

Patna. Bihar is likely to get a stipulated share of Ganga water for the first time. Use of 900 cusecs of Ganga water may be permitted by the Central Government. This will be a historic moment, because earlier there was no fixed account of Ganga river water for Bihar. The state had earlier demanded 2000 cusecs of water, but the Center has recommended 900 cusecs.

Recommendation of the committee of Union Jal Shakti Ministry

An internal committee of the Union Jal Shakti Ministry has recommended that this water be given to Bihar during the dry season, especially in the five months before monsoon. This period is considered to be between January to May, when the water level of Ganga is very low. However, a final decision is yet to be taken on this recommendation.

Bihar’s objection and central meeting

Recently, Bihar had raised objection on the issue of water supply to Bangladesh. Water Resources Minister Vijay Chaudhary and Principal Secretary Santosh Kumar Mall held a detailed discussion on this subject with the Union Jal Shakti Ministry. The state had also expressed its desire to become a party to the treaty during these talks.
