Kashmir: Fresh snowfall across parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday disrupted road and air connectivity, forcing the closure of the Srinagar–Jammu national highway and leading to the cancellation of multiple flights at Srinagar International Airport. Authorities cited safety concerns as snow accumulation and poor visibility affected key transport routes and operations.

National Highway Closed After Snow Accumulation

Officials confirmed that the Srinagar–Jammu national highway has been shut until further notice following fresh snow buildup at critical points along the route. Snow accumulation was reported near the Navyug Tunnel area in Qazigund, located in Kulgam district, as well as near Banihal in Ramban district. These sections are considered particularly vulnerable during winter weather due to their altitude and terrain.

Multiple Key Roads Remain Inaccessible

Traffic authorities stated that vehicular movement has been suspended in both directions on the Jammu–Srinagar highway. In addition to this major route, several other roads remain closed because of existing snow conditions. These include the Mughal Road, the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri road, and the Sinthan Pass road. Officials reiterated that no travel should be attempted on these routes until they are cleared and formally reopened.

The traffic department urged residents and travelers to avoid unnecessary movement during the current weather spell. Commuters were advised to wait for official updates before planning journeys, especially through mountainous areas where weather conditions can change rapidly and pose serious risks.

Flight Operations Affected at Srinagar Airport

Air travel was also impacted by the deteriorating weather. Airport authorities confirmed that eight morning flights scheduled to operate from Srinagar International Airport were cancelled due to low visibility and snowfall. Officials indicated that further cancellations or delays could occur depending on weather conditions throughout the day.

Weather Forecast Predicts Continued Instability

According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected at most locations across the union territory. The department has also warned of the possibility of heavier precipitation accompanied by gusty winds at isolated places. Similar weather conditions, though slightly milder, are expected to continue into Wednesday.

Advisory for Farmers and High-Altitude Residents

The weather department issued a precautionary advisory for farmers, recommending the suspension of agricultural activities until at least Wednesday. Residents in higher-altitude areas were also cautioned against venturing into steep or avalanche-prone zones, as fresh snowfall increases the risk of avalanches and landslides.

Chillai Kalan Enters Final Phase

The region is currently experiencing the latter part of Chillai Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter period in Kashmir, which began on December 21 and is scheduled to conclude on January 30. This phase is traditionally marked by extreme cold temperatures and frequent snowfall.

Despite the disruptions, the recent snowfall has eased long-standing concerns among local residents regarding water availability in the coming months.
