Chakrata: Heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand’s Chakrata region left nearly 80 tourists stranded in Lokhandi last week. The Tyuni‑Chakrata‑Mussoorie‑Maletha National Highway was covered with almost three feet of snow, completely blocking the road and cutting off access to the area.
According to local hoteliers Likhilesh Chauhan and Rohan Rana, several tourists had arrived in Lokhandi on January 22 to enjoy the winter scenery. However, the sudden heavy snowfall on Friday trapped them in the area, as the 30‑kilometer stretch of highway between Kotikanasar and Chakrata became impassable.
The stranded tourists remained in Lokhandi for three days, relying on local hospitality and support. The Public Works Department (PWD) worked tirelessly to clear the snow and reopen the blocked highway. After continuous efforts, the route was finally opened on Monday evening.
On Tuesday morning, all 80 tourists were able to leave safely for their destinations. Officials confirmed that no injuries or accidents were reported during the evacuation. The successful operation has been praised by locals and visitors alike, as it ensured the safety of stranded travelers despite harsh weather conditions.
The snowfall, while beautiful, caused significant disruption in the region. Traffic was halted, and essential supplies faced delays due to the blocked highway. Authorities have advised travelers to remain cautious when visiting high‑altitude areas during winter, as sudden weather changes can lead to dangerous situations.
Local residents said that such heavy snowfall is common in Chakrata during peak winter, but the accumulation this time was unusually high. Strong winds and freezing temperatures added to the challenges faced by both tourists and officials.
Despite the difficulties caused by snowfall, Chakrata remains one of Uttarakhand’s most popular tourist destinations. Known for its serene landscapes, dense forests, and panoramic views of the Himalayas, Chakrata attracts visitors throughout the year.
In winter, the region transforms into a snowy paradise, drawing tourists who enjoy trekking, camping, and nature photography. Lokhandi, in particular, is famous for its scenic beauty and peaceful environment. While heavy snow can sometimes disrupt travel, it also adds to the charm of Chakrata as a winter holiday spot.
