Friends, WhatsApp is the world’s most popular instant messaging app, which has more than 3 billion users, but its parent company Meta is once again facing legal investigation over its claims to user privacy and data security. A new lawsuit filed in America has raised serious questions about whether WhatsApp really gives that much privacy to millions of users around the world, let’s know the complete details about it.
On January 23, a new lawsuit was filed in a US District Court in San Francisco, accusing Meta and WhatsApp of making misleading statements about privacy and security.
The case includes plaintiffs from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa, showing that the issue has global implications.
The plaintiffs are challenging WhatsApp’s longstanding claim that user chats are completely private and the company cannot access them.
The allegations state that Meta and WhatsApp store and analyze users’ private conversations and can allegedly access them when needed.
It has also been claimed that the content of WhatsApp chats is saved and may be accessible to some company employees.
The lawsuit also names an anonymous whistleblower who allegedly exposed internal practices that are contrary to WhatsApp’s public privacy assurances.
Lawyers representing the plaintiffs have requested the court to certify the case as a class-action lawsuit, thereby covering the larger number of affected users.
WhatsApp has consistently maintained that all messages, photos, videos and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, which means only the sender and recipient can see them.
The company says it uses the Signal protocol, which is also used by Meta’s Facebook Messenger, to ensure strong encryption.
