Lucknow. Uttar Pradesh's 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) model has today become a major topic of development discussion across the country. This initiative, which started in the year 2018, has now become not just a government scheme, but a strong example of district-based economic transformation. This scheme, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has proved that when policies are made keeping in mind local needs and traditional capabilities, their positive results are clearly visible on the ground.
The success of the ODOP model is clearly visible in the export figures of the state. In the year 2017, the total export of Uttar Pradesh was Rs 88 thousand crore, in which the share of ODOP products was Rs 58 thousand crore. By the year 2024, this export will increase to Rs 186 thousand crore, in which the contribution of ODOP export is Rs 93 thousand crore. This significant growth reflects the government support received by ODOP and its effectiveness.
The ODOP model of Uttar Pradesh is now being seen as an effective blueprint for other states of the country. The District Based Product Strategy has strengthened exports at the grassroots level and has played an important role in connecting small producers to the global supply chain.
The basic concept of the ODOP scheme has been to create a distinct identity for each district. In all 75 districts of the state, any one traditional art, craft or product was identified and given government protection, market access and branding support. Products like brass of Moradabad, weaving of Banaras, glass of Firozabad, perfume of Kannauj and carpets of Bhadohi have achieved new identity under this policy.
The ODOP model of Yogi government has played an important role in removing the long standing problem of unbalanced regional development in the state. Whereas earlier industrial activities were limited to a few big cities, now small districts and towns are also becoming centers of economic activity. This has increased local employment and made effective control of migration possible.
According to the data of the state government, due to the ODOP scheme, there has been a significant increase in the income of artisans and small entrepreneurs. A large number of artisans have been trained under the ODOP Skill Development and Toolkit Distribution Scheme. Till now, more than 1.25 lakh modern toolkits have been distributed in the state, which has improved the quality of the products and made them accessible to the national and international markets.
Projects worth more than Rs 6,000 crore have been approved so far under the ODOP Margin Money Scheme. This has directly benefited micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) and has given new impetus to entrepreneurship in rural and semi-urban areas.
ODOP given special platform at Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show (UPITS) 2025. The event saw 466 stalls set up in the ODOP pavilion, generating business leads and deals worth approximately Rs 20.77 crore. Similarly, during Prayagraj Mahakumbh 2025, an ODOP exhibition was organized in 6,000 square meter area, in which 44 ODOP products of the state with GI tag were displayed.
