New Delhi: England beat Sri Lanka convincingly by 53 runs in the third and final ODI to win the series 2-1 on Tuesday. Riding on an all-round performance from the batters and bowlers, the English side bundled out Sri Lanka for 304 runs in 46.4 overs, after putting up a big total of 357/3 in the stipulated 50 overs in the first innings.

Joe Root and Harry Brook starred with the bat registering centuries in the first innings and the bowlers led by Will Jacks (2/43) did the rest with the ball to take the English side to a comfortable victory. Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson also contributed with two wickets while Sam Curran also claimed one wicket.

For the Sri Lankan side, Pavan Rathnayake’s century and Pathum Nissanka’s half-century went in vain as the side fell 53 runs short after bundling out for 304 runs. Rathnayake scored 121 runs off 115 balls while Nissanka scored 50 runs off 25 balls but the effort from the duo could not help the hosts cross the finish line.

First away ODI series win for ENG in 3 years

Earlier in the first innings, unbeaten centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook took England to a massive score in the series finale. While Root scored 111 runs off 108 balls, his 20th century in the format and his 61st in international cricket, Brook hammered his third century scoring an unbeaten 136 off just 66 balls. The lethal batter slammed 9 sixes and 11 boundaries as he smashed his highest-ever score in the 50-over format.

Jacob Bethell also contributed with 65 runs while for Sri Lanka, none of the bowlers could really impress with the ball except taking a wicket apiece. Sri Lanka had started off with a win in the first ODI while England levelled with a victory in the second match.
