News India Live, Digital Desk: Every Associate Nation dreams of making a place in the T20 World Cup, the great cricket tournament. But the way the Scotland men’s team has reached the World Cup 2024 (or the upcoming T20 World Cup) this time, it has created a bit of a strange controversy. Actually, the Scotland team has entered the T20 World Cup on the ‘invitation’ of the ICC. After this unexpected entry, a player from Scotland has directly expressed deep sympathy for Bangladesh Cricket. After all, what is this matter of Scotland’s entry? ICC (International Cricket Council) had made some new rules for the T20 World Cup 2024 (or any upcoming edition). Under the same rules, the ICC invited the top performing Associate teams based on the global T20 rankings, who were not required to play the main qualifier event. Scotland took advantage of this ranking system to directly join the T20 World Cup. Why is Bangladesh feeling ‘cheated’? The real problem is with Bangladesh. In the ICC’s old qualifier model, if Full Member teams like Bangladesh did not perform well in the rankings, they too had to play qualifier events with the Associate Nations. Now that Scotland came in directly on the basis of ranking, it sent a message that Bangladesh too would have had to struggle to make their place or they might have lost the place due to some other event (although Bangladesh has always been a Full Member). What did the Scotland player say? Speaking on the matter Scottish cricketer Wallace Sharpand openly said, “We have full sympathy for Bangladesh cricket. We understand that when a full member team has to struggle to make a World Cup place or they lose their place, it is disappointing.” He meant that Bangladesh had to go through the qualifier processes, while teams like them received invitations. Sharland further said that they are following the ICC rules and this opportunity given to the team is a big achievement for them. He thanked the ICC for giving priority to the global rankings, giving Scotland a bigger platform to showcase their talent. It shows how Associate teams are taking advantage of the rule changes to establish themselves on the big stage, even if it comes at the expense of Full Member teams.
