A guest on The Repair Shop became emotional whilst honouring a dear friend who died in a devastating accident.

The cherished BBC programme aired tonight, Wednesday 28 January, with guest Jonny presenting a treasured rugby memento for textiles expert Rebecca to potentially restore.

"I'm not sure it's going to survive, actually," he began, unfurling the flag he had brought along, which dated from a 1936 rugby match between Ireland and England.

He explained: "This flag was presented by the Ireland team to the captain of the England team as a memento of the game.

"My grandfather, Jack Siggins, played rugby for Ireland and captained Ireland in this game in 1936," reports Gloucestershire Live.

He proceeded to disclose how he came into possession of the flag once more after it had been gifted by his grandfather to the England rugby team.

Jonny recounted encountering a friend named Olly in a pub whilst watching a rugby match, and learning that Olly's grandfather had been the captain of the English rugby team during that same period.

He continued: "This is a memento from the game, my grandfather would have given Olly's grandfather this flag."

Nevertheless, the flag was returned to Jonny following Olly's heartbreaking death.

Struggling to contain his emotions, Jonny revealed: "Olly was tragically killed in a road accident and at his memorial service, his father George said, 'I have something that I'd like you to have'... this flag.

"He explained that it would have gone to Olly, but now, because of our link, he thought it was appropriate that it came to me."

Jonny struggled to contain his emotions as he described how "generous, kind and warm-hearted" Olly had been.

"We all miss him so much, and it should be him doing this today but it's me instead," he said.

The flag had been left in an extremely delicate state, with the silk disintegrating into individual threads.

Fortunately, restoration proved possible, and Jonny was utterly astonished when he witnessed the results for the first time.

"That's amazing, you've worked a miracle," he told Rebecca. "I'm absolutely staggered."

He expressed his desire to gather regularly with Olly's relatives so they could reunite and appreciate the flag together.

He added: "A big bit of my motivation for getting it fixed was to preserve Olly's memory, now its repaired, I'm really looking forward to showing Olly's family.

"It'll be such a lovely opportunity to come together to honour him and to say thank you."

The Repair Shop airs Tuesdays at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
