Nipah Virus cases in West Bengal: Nipah virus has struck once again, creating an atmosphere of concern across the country. According to recent reports, 5 cases of Nipah virus have been confirmed in the state. About 100 people who came in contact with the virus have been kept in quarantine as a precautionary measure. These also include some health workers, who have been kept under observation in the hospital so that the infection does not spread further. Two suspected cases reported on January 11, 2026 have further increased the vigilance of health agencies.
Nipah virus is not a new virus, but its severity makes it extremely dangerous. It is a zoonotic virus, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. It was first identified in Malaysia in 1999. Earlier in India, its cases have also been reported in states like Kerala. This virus can cause serious problems mainly to the brain (encephalitis) and breathing, due to which the patient’s condition can deteriorate rapidly.
The most important reason for the spread of Nipah virus is fruit-eating bats, which are considered its natural carriers. Eating fruit contaminated with bat saliva or feces can cause infection. Apart from this, this virus can also spread due to date juice (toddy) kept in the open, coming in very close contact with an infected person or during treatment without protection. In some cases, the possibility of infection through animals like pigs has also come to light.
Initially its symptoms may seem like common fever, such as high fever, headache, vomiting, sore throat and fatigue. But later serious symptoms like difficulty in breathing, dizziness, confusion, fainting or seizures may appear. In such a situation, if timely treatment is not received, it can prove fatal.
Avoid eating open fruits or raw date juice
Eat fruits only after washing them thoroughly
Avoid contact with sick person and use mask
Follow infection control rules during treatment in hospitals
Contact a doctor immediately as soon as symptoms appear
Vigilance, correct information and timely treatment is the strongest way to prevent Nipah virus.
