Brimming with rural character, this Yorkshire village provides a quintessentially English day trip or weekend escape with breathtaking scenery and historic landmarks – including its renowned pub.
A peaceful hamlet nestled within the natural splendour of the North York Moors National Park, Beck Hole is an often overlooked destination in the area, with much to offer visitors. Reached by tourists via several steep lanes, it's a location primarily visited by keen walkers and hikers eager to discover new terrain.
One of the most popular routes drawing people to the village is the historic rail trail, which follows a disused railway line. The route links the nearby towns of Goathland and Grosmont by winding through the village. Though it's not the only draw, another magnificent attraction for walkers is a trip to Thomas Foss, the natural, picturesque waterfall concealed within the woodland.
During the warmer months this is frequently used as a wild swimming location as locals and tourists alike cool down in the fresh waters, though it's recommended to arrive early to beat the crowds.
Upon reaching the waterfall, one traveller shared their review, noting: "A tricky rocky walk at times, but you are rewarded at the end with a stunning view of the waterfall.
"Well worth the drive and effort in getting there." Following a day of exploring the moors, it's the Birch Hall Inn, however, that keeps visitors returning, for its traditional pub charm and welcoming atmosphere.
It is remarkably compact, with an exceptionally lengthy heritage stretching back to the 1600s, which has been likened to 'like stepping back in time'.
One visitor said on TripAdvisor: "This is a lovely and tiny pub which is 'sort of' the halfway point on a circular walk which starts and ends in Goathland.
"On a sunny day there is nothing better than sitting at the front of the pub with the birds chirping away and the stream off to one side. A great little stop."
Now a Grade II listed structure, the establishment remains a cherished relic of bygone days but has undergone a few subtle alterations over the years. Today it comprises two diminutive bars, divided by a traditional sweet shop, which helps preserve its historic character.
Another visitor said: "Wow, this place is a must for traditional pub-goers from all over the world...it's like stepping back in time inside Dr Who's TARDIS... The bar with its decor will amaze you...try a pint of Beckwater and a pork pie with pickle...I don't want to spoil it for you by giving a detailed review...all I can say is get yourselves down there."
Across the village you'll discover the majority of its structures are actually listed, several dating from the 18th century sandstone era. These include the Fir Tree farmhouse and Brookwood farmhouse, alongside 19th century treasures such as The White House and Old Woodbine.
