The sudden death of singer and actor Prashant Tamang at the age of 43 has once again brought attention to the growing incidence of cardiac arrests among people in their 40s, often without prior warning signs.

Prashant Tamang, winner of Indian Idol Season 3, passed away in his sleep on Sunday due to a cardiac arrest. His wife confirmed that it was a natural death and ruled out any foul play, stating that he had no known health issues. The news has shocked fans and members of the entertainment industry.

Heart attacks among the young on the rise

Cardiologists say heart attacks and sudden cardiac arrests are increasingly being reported in younger age groups, particularly in South Asia. Dr Saurabh Chopra, Consultant Cardiologist at Fortis Hospital, Manesar, said smoking, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels and family history remain major risk factors. He added that early screening and aggressive lifestyle correction are critical after the age of 40.

Hidden heart problems a key concern

According to Dr Sanjay Bhat, Senior Consultant – Interventional Cardiology at Aster CMI Hospital, sudden cardiac arrest can also occur due to undiagnosed heart rhythm disorders, genetic conditions, or heart muscle diseases. “Some people may appear completely healthy but carry silent risks that manifest suddenly, even during sleep,” he explained.

Post-Covid impact on heart health

Experts note that the post-Covid period has seen a rise in cardiac complications. Covid- heart muscle damage, long-term inflammation, delayed health check-ups during the pandemic, increased stress, and sedentary lifestyles have all contributed to higher risks.

Warning signs not to ignore

Doctors advise people over 40 to watch for symptoms such as chest discomfort, breathlessness, unexplained fatigue, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, or swelling in the feet. Regular health check-ups, stress management, exercise, balanced diet and adequate sleep are key preventive measures.

Tamang’s untimely death serves as a stark reminder that heart health cannot be taken for granted, even in seemingly fit individuals.
