Powerful supercomputer Athena launched by NASA

NASA recently unveiled its latest supercomputer, **Athena**, which with its speed of 20 petaflops will become the new host of space missions. This advanced machine is installed in the Ames Research Center and through it will contribute to the operation of upcoming missions to the Moon and Mars. Besides, this machine will also play an important role in the field of climate research and aeronautics.

Features of Athena

  • Speed: 20 quadrillion calculations per second

  • Design: modular structure, low energy consumption and advanced cooling system

  • Mission: To provide accurate simulations for next generation missions to the Moon and Mars

Unique Features of Athena

Performance in supercomputing is measured in petaflops and **Athena**’s capabilities enable it to perform complex rocket simulations and AI training. This machine is energy conscious, allowing it to deliver high performance with low energy 24/7.

Athena’s role in the future

Athena not only processes the data but also helps NASA engineers test “what-if” scenarios.

  • Accurate simulation of rocket launch

  • Discovering hidden patterns in climate data

  • Tracking the paths of asteroids

  • Design of new generation supersonic jets

Thus, the success of future missions will now depend on Athena’s speed and intelligence.

hybrid strategy

NASA developed Athena as part of a hybrid computing strategy, combining traditional supercomputing and cloud platforms. This provides more flexibility to researchers, which will help keep NASA ahead in the space race.
