New Delhi: In a fast-paced lifestyle, health issues are often pushed aside in favor of meeting deadlines, taking care of family obligations, and spending time in front of screens. One health issue that is often overlooked is a hernia, an issue that may start benign but can become serious if left untreated. A hernia develops when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weakened area in the muscle or tissue wall surrounding it. Because the symptoms of a hernia are often intermittent or mild, many people brush them off as a temporary nuisance. However, this can lead to serious complications that need to be treated immediately.

Signs of a hernia you might miss

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Mriganka S. Sharma (Director-General & Minimally Invasive Surgery) & Dr. Amit D. Goswami (Associate Director-General & Minimally Invasive Surgery), CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, spoke about the many signs of hernia that go overlooked most of the time.

  1. A Small Lump That Comes and Goes: One of the first symptoms of a hernia is the development of a small lump or swelling, typically in the abdominal or groin region. This lump or swelling may develop when standing up, coughing, lifting heavy objects, or straining, but it goes away when lying down. Many busy people brush off this symptom as a side effect of gaining weight, having gas, or straining a muscle. Because the lump is not always painful, it is easy to justify putting off a doctor’s visit.
  2. Mild or Intermittent Pain: The pain associated with a hernia does not have to be acute and intermittent. Many patients experience mild pain, a pulling sensation, or mild discomfort that can progress after prolonged standing, physical activity, or sitting at a desk for an extended period of time. In a busy lifestyle, discomfort can be blamed on fatigue, poor posture, or stress. Over-the-counter pain relievers can offer temporary relief, further delaying the need for a correct diagnosis.
  3. Heaviness or Pressure in the Abdomen or Groin: A feeling of heaviness, pressure, or weakness in the lower abdomen or groin is another symptom that is often underestimated. Patients with physically demanding jobs or weightlifters at the gym may attribute this to muscle fatigue. However, over time, this pressure can increase in intensity, indicating that the hernia is progressing.
  4. Digestive Discomfort and Heartburn: Some hernias, especially those in the upper abdomen, can cause digestive discomfort such as acid reflux, heartburn, bloating, or difficulty swallowing. In a busy lifestyle, symptoms can be blamed on irregular eating habits, spicy foods, or stress. While occasional heartburn is common, increasing or progressive symptoms should not be dismissed.
  5. Pain During Coughing or Heavy Lifting: If you feel pain or discomfort during coughing, sneezing, laughing, or during heavy lifting, it may be a sign of a weak abdominal wall. This is commonly underestimated as a pulled muscle, especially if you are physically fit or have just exercised. However, over time, the pressure may lead to the hernia growing in size and becoming more painful.

Why You Should Not Ignore Early Symptoms

Early symptoms of a hernia may lead to complications such as incarceration or strangulation, where the tissue is cut off from its blood supply. This is a medical emergency, and it may need immediate surgery. However, early detection can aid in planned surgery, thus preventing complications.

Amidst a busy life, it is common to ignore pain and learn to “push through” the discomfort. However, bulges, pain, or digestive issues should not be ignored. By recognising early symptoms and consulting a doctor, you can prevent complications and heal faster. Your health is as important as your busy life.
