The UK is home to some of the most stunning countryside in the world, but getting to the more remote locations means having to risk driving down some truly nerve-wracking roads. The Bealach na Bà pass, located in the Applecross peninsula of the Scottish Highlands, is often considered the scariest road in the whole of Britain.
It is known for having a truly breathtaking view where you can see mountains, glens and the sea all at once with mist rising over the peaks. However, drivers are advised not pay attention to the scenery - the narrow single track road has minimal barriers and goes from sea level to 2,053 feet in a very short distance. There are some very steep hairpin bends that require very careful driving, and Scotland's famous rainy weather makes it even more dangerous to navigate.
In winter, the road is frequently closed due to snow and ice. Even in milder weather, it is best avoided unless you are an experienced and confident driver.
When you first approach the road after leaving Applecross village, there is a big sign that advises learner drivers, large vehicles and caravans not to attempt the crossing and points in the direction of a safer route.
The road seems easy for the first mile but will begin to twist as you climb up the mountainside. Sheep are often seen grazing at the side of certain areas of the road.
Drivers will face a long drop over the edge before long. The wind is said to be incredibly unnerving and will get louder the higher you drive up the road.
Having to navigate the tight corners, wildlife and then the foggy mist makes this a truly frightening experience - especially so as it is almost impossible to turn back due to the many bends.
However, once you reach the top, the road flattens lightly and you will see one of the most beautiful views the Highlands have to offer of the Isle of Skye in the distance.
On Tripadriver, the Bealach na Ba Road mostly has a good rating thanks to the scenery but almost every review warns that it is a very scary drive and not one for nervous drivers.
One reviewer named Lesley said: "Scariest drive in Scotland but the most scenic. This is a wonderful drive but one which will tax even experienced drivers."
Another woman said: "Road probably stunning in fine weather but my advice is that you need to be able to see the top and it's not likely to be covered in cloud or mist as this was one of the scariest drives I have ever done and it was not something I will be doing again anytime soon."
Someone else wrote: "Should be avoided if narrow passing places, hair pin bends and steep drops worry you. However, for those that stick with it, the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking."
