Prayagraj. Allahabad High Court on Friday made a big comment on the attitude of Uttar Pradesh Police. The Allahabad High Court said that UP Police officials are pressurizing the judges, especially the Chief Judicial Magistrates (CJM), to pass orders in their favor. Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal said that the court cannot allow Uttar Pradesh to become a police state. The court was hearing the increasing trend of shooting in the leg during encounters in the state.

These comments were made during a virtual hearing held in the presence of DGP Rajeev Krishna and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad. The Court further observed that a worrying trend is being observed across the State by the police, especially the young officers, of putting pressure on the judicial officers to obtain specific orders. The court said that the law is not being followed in any district. I did not find a single case where the law or the Supreme Court’s direction was followed. He further said that disagreements between district police chiefs and judicial officers have become common whenever the judge questions police action.

The court emphasized that such disputes often result in superintendents of police putting direct pressure on judicial officers for specific orders. Citing an example, the judge said a Chief Justice had to be transferred “just to stop this tussle”. Justice Deshwal clarified that the issue is not limited to just one district. Feedback from district judges reveals that in most districts, police officers, including IPS officers, put pressure on judicial officers if orders do not go in their favour.
