Arsenal restored their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with a very encouraging victory away from home at Leeds United. After the disappointment of last weekend, it was so key that Mikel Arteta’s side responded, and they did brilliantly.

Bukayo Saka picked up a problem during the warm-up and was replaced in the starting eleven by Noni Madueke. It was indeed the right winger, however, who set up the first goal, swinging in at the second attempt for Martin Zubimendi to head past Karl Darlow.

Madueke was again heavily involved in the second, his whipped corner punched into the back of the net by Darlow as he tried to deal with it. It means that ‘own goal’ had joined both Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard as the joint top scorer in the league for the Gunners.

That was until the Swede added his sixth league goal of the league campaign, launching himself at substitute Gabriel Martinelli’s cross. Gabriel Jesus came off the bench and should’ve scored three but settled for the one.

Here is how fooball.london rated the performances of the Arsenal players involved:

David Raya – Was not needed much in the first half but had to contend with a Pascal Struijk header early in the second which he dealt with well. 7

Jurrien Timber – Nice work down the right flank to open up Leeds, combined well with Noni Madueke. He also provided some great crosses and should’ve earned an assist from Jesus. 8

William Saliba – Had to contend with Dominic Calvert-Lewin all afternoon and did an excellent job. 8

Gabriel – Stood tall, strong and resolute all game and was unbothered by anything he had to contend with, top display. 8

Piero Hincapie – A battling performance from the left-back, up against some difficult wingers. Wasn’t as impactful as his right-back opposite, however. 7

Martin Zubimendi – Shot from the edge of the Leeds box tamely collected by Darlow. However, it was his header from Madueke’s cross which was glanced into the back of the net. Great response from his mistake last week. 8

Declan Rice – Making his 300th Premier League appearance, there were some really nice, purposeful passes, including finding Madueke in the build-up for the first goal. Should’ve earned as assist when he set up Jesus too. 8

Kai Havertz – Starting for the first time in the league since his return to the side, he was not heavily involved in the first half, making just four passes. However, he worked hard and broke up play well, he also provided extra defensive cover and made some big clearances from set-pieces. 6

Noni Madueke – Brilliant curling cross to give the Gunners the lead in the first half, after seeing the first initial corner cleared. It was then his corner that Darlow failed to deal with and punched off his own post and into the net. 8

Viktor Gyokeres – Was gifted a brilliant chance by Trossard in the second half, had the chance to shoot but took too long, and Joe Rodon slid in to block the shot. Thankfully, he made up for it, getting on the end of Martinelli’s cross with an outstretched leg. 8

Leandro Trossard – Wonderful pass in the second half to find his Swedish teammate, deserved an assist. That was his only real impactful moment but did cause the Leeds defence bother. 7

Substitutes:

Martin Odegaard – Replaced Kai Havertz to return to the middle of the field. Nice pass down the right to Martinelli through the gap before the third goal. Solid performance under some pressure made better with his pass into Jesus for the fourth goal. 8

Gabriel Martinelli – Replaced Noni Madueke and played on his less comfortable right wing role. Needlessly gave away a Leeds corner initially, which he was thankfully not punished for.

He made up for that with a great left-footed cross which found the stretched leg of Gyokeres. Good impact from the bench in a position not his own. 7

Gabriel Jesus – Came on for Gyokeres and was gifted a great chance to score by Rice, who put it on a plate for the Brazilian, who then put it wide. Then a headed chance, free one too, straight at the keeper.

However, he finally managed to get on the scoresheet with the hardest chance of the lot, great touch, turn and curling finish. 7

Riccardo Calafiori – Good to see him back on the field in the left-back role and has positioned himself well to start in midweek against Chelsea. 6

Eberechi Eze – Came on for the last ten minutes with little say on the occasion. n/a
