melbourne, 1 February. World number one Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz not only broke 38-year-old Serbian legend Novak Djokovic’s dream of winning a historic 25th Grand Slam at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Park on Sunday evening but also won his seventh major title in the form of Australian Open and with this became the youngest male player in the world to complete a career Grand Slam.
Alcaraz’s brilliant comeback after losing the first set
Top-ranked Alcaraz lost the first set in the final that lasted three hours and two minutes, but after that he started increasing the pressure on 24-time experienced Grand Slam winner fourth seed Djokovic and made a brilliant comeback to win the title 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.
10-time champion Djokovic lost the final for the first time in Melbourne Park
This is Djokovic’s first defeat in the final at Melbourne Park, challenging for a record 25th Grand Slam title. Earlier, he had won all his 10 finals here.
It is noteworthy that when a player wins the title of all four Grand Slams – Australian Open, Wimbledon, French Open and US Open, then it is called completing the career Grand Slam and Alcaraz achieved the same feat at the age of just 22. He had already won the title twice each in the French Open (2024, 2025), Wimbledon (2023, 2024) and the US Open (2023, 2025), but could not go beyond the quarter-finals in his last four attempts at Melbourne Park.
After sealing the title win, Alcaraz dropped the racket from his hands, fell on his back to the ground and placed his hands on his head. He stayed there for a few seconds before going to the net to shake Djokovic’s hand. The two players exchanged pleasantries and Djokovic smiled while congratulating his rival, who was 16 years his junior. After this, the new champion ran to hug his coach sitting on the chairs on one side of the court and later also hugged his father and other team members in the stands.
The Spanish star took advantage of 5 out of 16 break points.
It is noteworthy that both the players had made it to the finals by registering a tough win in five sets in the semi-finals. For more than three hours, both of them displayed tremendous fitness, sportsmanship and stamina in pursuit of their historic achievements. No player was ready to accept defeat on big points. The Spanish star took advantage of five out of 16 break points, while Djokovic could convert only two out of six break points.
Alcaraz and Sinner became an obstacle in Djokovic’s path, together they have won the last 9 major titles.
If seen, Djokovic’s campaign to win the 25th Grand Slam singles title was once again stopped by one of Alcaraz and Yannick Sinner. Together, these two have won the last nine Grand Slam titles. Whereas Djokovic was disappointed after reaching the semi-finals in all four major events last year.
Alcaraz breaks Don Budge’s record on his way to becoming the youngest career Grand Slam
Djokovic had defeated Sinner in the semi-finals and was on track to become the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era, but Alcaraz dashed his hopes and became the youngest male player to win all four Grand Slam singles titles at the age of 22 years and 272 days. He broke the record set by Don Budge at the 1938 French Open Championships, when he was 22 years and 363 days old.
