It's always exciting to jet off abroad to explore a different country but, when it comes to travelling, it appears there are a few rules you need to follow. Laurie, who's a pilot's wife, is known for sharing travel tips, and she recently issued some pretty important advice.

Laurie, known as Travel Tips by Laurie on YouTube, said there's a common piece of clothing you should never wear when travelling on a plane. While you may want to arrive at your desired location looking chic and stylish, there are a few considerations you should make when picking an outfit, and she urged people to listen to the information.

Laurie revealed all in a recent video. It's not the only piece of travel advice to be shared recently either, as Ryanair also posted some essential information about rules regarding hand luggage.

In a clip published online, she started off by explaining which items you should avoid wearing on a flight. Laurie said: "In the airplane, I recommend not to wear white.

"I did twice in my 23 years as a pilot's wife at the beginning, and I got smudges on my jeans from bringing my luggage down from the overhead bins and pizza stains inside the airport that some other passenger had eaten and dripped some on the boarding gate seats."

She continued: "Do not wear complicated jumpsuits. Why? Because they're complicated. They're going to add stress to you, especially inside a tight, cramped lavatory inside the airplane.

"My travel tip is to pack that outfit and avoid wearing it in the airplane. Do not wear stiff leather or stiff denim, because it restricts your blood flow.

"While I sometimes wear trendy pieces, this video is going to focus on cosy, stretchy and versatile garments you should be wearing and a few to avoid. All that is so we maximise your comfort from boarding to baggage claim."

It may sound a simple piece of advice to not wear a jumpsuit, but avoiding stiff clothing is actually super important. While it's generally acceptable to wear materials like denim when flying, it's actually not advised due to the fact that it can cause discomfort.

Cabin pressure causes abdominal bloating and the rigid fabric can restrict movement and boost the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). For comfort and safety, it's best to wear loose-fitting clothing or athleisure.

Why should you avoid it?

There are a few reasons why you should avoid wearing denim when travelling on a plane. Firstly, the tight waistband can dig in as the body swells due to lower cabin pressure.

As well as being uncomfortable, tight clothing can also reduce blood circulation, increasing the risk of DVT. Thick denim and belts can also cause issues at security checkpoints.

In other words, the material is best avoided for a variety of reasons. If you do wear denim, it's best to only wear a high-stretch material.

While popping on a pair of jeans may save luggage space, the cons can often outweigh the pros. Generally, people are advised to wear comfier options like jogging bottoms or leggings.

As we head further into 2026, this is one of Laurie's top pieces of travel advice. It's worth taking note of before you jet off abroad.
