ain one of the most painful and preventable emergencies affecting children, with more than 300 young patients treated every year by the paediatric burn programme at University Health. Medical experts stress that most serious burns occur inside the home and can be avoided through simple safety practices.

Hot foods top the list of burn causes

According to Dr Christopher Crane, hot soups and microwave noodles are the leading causes of burn injuries among children. Uneven heating and steam can cause severe scalds within seconds.

Experts advise allowing food to cool, stirring before serving, and never letting children handle hot containers or use microwaves unsupervised.

Boiling water and hot drinks pose hidden dangers

Burns from boiling water often happen when pots are pulled down or hot taps are turned on accidentally. Jennifer Northway recommends using back burners, turning pan handles inward, and setting water heaters to 120°F to reduce risk.

Hot beverages are another common cause of scalds. Children should sit at a table when consuming hot food or drinks, which should always be cooled and covered where possible.

Fireworks and hot oil increase injury risk

Firework- burns continue to bring children to emergency rooms, especially during festive seasons. Sparklers can reach temperatures of 1,200°F and should be kept away from children. Glow sticks are a safer alternative.

Hot oil and grease burns occur during cooking when splatter or spills happen. Children should never be left unattended in kitchens, and adults should avoid carrying children while cooking.

Prevention through awareness and education

University Health’s paediatric burn programme, part of its Level I trauma centre, focuses on advanced burn care and community education. Experts emphasise that awareness and small behavioural changes can prevent life-altering injuries.

Health professionals urge families to treat burn prevention as a daily habit — one that protects children from avoidable pain and emergency hospital visits.
