Following NVIDIA's footsteps, Intel to develop GPUs for AI, gaming

Intel has announced its plans to enter the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, a domain currently ruled by NVIDIA.


The announcement was made by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan during the Cisco AI Summit on Tuesday.


Unlike traditional CPUs, GPUs are specialized processors used for gaming and artificial intelligence model training.

The new GPU project will be led by Kevork Kechichian, Intel's executive vice president and general manager of the data center group.


The company hired him in September as part of a wave of new engineer-focused hires.


In January, Eric Demmers was also brought on board for this initiative. He previously worked at Qualcomm for over 13 years as a senior vice president of engineering.

Tan emphasized that Intel's GPU strategy will be guided by customer demands and needs. This suggests a more tailored approach to product development.
