New Delhi: American singer Nick Jonas has shared a deeply personal chapter from his life, opening up about the traumatic early days following the birth of his daughter, Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Speaking on the Jay Shetty Podcast, the What A Man Gotta Do singer reflected on the fear and emotional endurance that defined the first few months of parenthood for him and his actress wife, Priyanka Chopra.
Nick, 33, revealed that Malti was born prematurely under “very intense circumstances”, a period he admitted he had never spoken about publicly before. The couple had been expecting their daughter to arrive in April 2022, but things changed suddenly.

Fighting back emotion, Nick shared how fragile Malti was during those early hours. He spoke about the NICU as a place that felt both comforting and frightening at the same time. The smell, the sounds and the constant anxiety remain etched in his memory even now. He said he still feels “awestruck” that he gets to experience his daughter’s presence after witnessing how hard she fought to survive.
Nick Jonas recalls doing 12-hour shifts at hospitalThe singer also detailed the exhausting routine he and Priyanka followed while Malti remained hospitalised. “It was Covid-19 time, and so my wife and I basically did 12-hour shifts at the hospital for 3.5 months,” he said. Each day was divided between them, ensuring that one parent was always by Malti’s side. Watching other families go through similar struggles added to the emotional weight of the experience.
Nick revealed that Malti underwent six blood transfusions during her time in the NICU. Slowly, she began to gain weight and show signs of strength. “She fought every day for 3.5 months,” he said, adding that the moment they were finally allowed to take her home remains unforgettable for them both.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married in 2018 in Rajasthan, celebrating with both Christian and Hindu ceremonies. They welcomed Malti in January 2022.
On the work front, Nick is gearing up for the release of Power Ballad, co-starring Paul Rudd and directed by John Carney, which hits screens on June 5.
