Chandigarh's Suvinder Vicky, known for his powerful and authentic performances, is set to portray a conflicted father in the upcoming ZEE5 series Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz, debuting on February 6. This series delves into the complex dynamics between a parent's legacy and their child's aspirations.
In this role, Suvinder embodies a dedicated raagi who wishes for his son to continue the family's cherished musical heritage. However, the son dreams of pursuing football, creating a poignant conflict between tradition and personal ambition that lies at the series' core.
During a promotional event in Chandigarh, Suvinder, dressed stylishly in black with a red turban, was accompanied by his on-screen son, Mihir Ahuja, who wore a contrasting off-white outfit. Their chemistry was palpable, with Mihir showing great respect towards Suvinder, who generously allowed him to shine. The pair even performed an emotional scene from the show, with Mihir visibly moved, his tears blurring the line between acting and genuine emotion.
When asked to sing a shabad while observing maryada, Mihir respectfully covered his head, and together they sang So Satgur Pyara Mere Naal Hai, creating a spiritually resonant atmosphere.
The narrative of Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz centers on Ghuppi Singh, a 16-year-old boy with a stammer, who grapples with fulfilling his father's expectations while pursuing his own dreams. As a father of two daughters in real life, Suvinder found the opportunity to explore a father-son dynamic on screen particularly compelling.
To authentically portray a raagi, Suvinder engaged in extensive preparation, including learning to play the harmonium and practicing singing prior to filming. He remarked, “The role of a raagi may seem straightforward, but it requires significant dedication. Rising at 3:30 am for brahmvela, taking a snan, and serving as a pathi at the Gurdwara demands immense discipline and passion.”
Mihir Ahuja, a young actor caught between the millennial and Gen Z generations, matched Suvinder's commitment. He shared that the series allowed him to reconnect with his Punjabi roots. “I grew up speaking Punjabi with my dadi, who passed away two years ago. It was special to converse in Punjabi again with Suvinder ji,” he expressed.
Although the series features a blend of Hindi and Punjabi, Mihir emphasized that its emotional depth transcends language barriers. “The feelings conveyed will resonate across different generations and regions because emotions are universal,” he stated.
Suvinder concurred, noting, “Parents should pay attention to their children's dreams, while children must recognize that parents have their own valid perspectives. It should be a harmonious partnership.”
Following the acclaim of Kohrra, which brought him national fame and a high IMDb ranking alongside stars like Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif, Suvinder remains humble.
Despite Mumbai being his professional base, Chandigarh remains his true home. “I still reside here,” he said with a smile. “Mumbai meri rozi-roti sambhal rahi hai, par Waheguru se ardaas hai — Bombay aur Chandigarh nu ek kar de.”
Shabad – Reet Aur Riwaaz is a poignant coming-of-age story that poses the enduring question: Is legacy something we inherit or something we choose? The series will be available for streaming exclusively on ZEE5 starting February 6.
