A new initiative is going to be started today in the field of taxi services in India. With the official launch of Bharat Taxi in New Delhi, there will be entry of taxi service based on cooperative model in the country. This app will be inaugurated by Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. This government-backed initiative is being seen as a big change for both taxi drivers and passengers.
According to information shared by the official The post said that this platform will strengthen the cooperative system and make travel services more citizen-centric. Bharat Taxi will be formally launched in Delhi-NCR today at 3 pm. There are also plans to expand it to other states and cities in the coming time.
Bharat Taxi is a ride-hailing app, which is completely based on a cooperative structure. According to the Union Cooperative Ministry, in this model the drivers have been kept as owners and partners, not just service providers. Its purpose is to provide relief from the heavy commission charged by private companies and exploitation of drivers.
However, it has been clarified that Bharat Taxi is not directly operated by the Government of India. It is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited. This cooperative is supported by professionals who have previously worked with successful cooperatives like Amul.
The working model of Bharat Taxi is different from other apps. Here every driver is called “Sarthi”. There are five shareholders in a co-operative society. Unlike private aggregators, no commission is charged per ride. Instead, drivers are charged a fixed fee of Rs 30 per day for using the app. This has a direct impact on the drivers’ income and gives them more control.
This app can prove beneficial for travelers also. According to officials, Bharat Taxi fares can be up to 30 percent less than private companies. At present, more than 4 lakh drivers are said to be registered on this platform. Many arrangements have also been made in Bharat Taxi from security point of view. This includes a dedicated helpline, driver verification system and 35 assistance booths set up in collaboration with Delhi Police.
It is noteworthy that the pilot project of this platform started in December 2025 in Delhi and Gujarat, where an average of 5,500 rides were recorded daily. The app has many options like AC-Non AC cab, XL cab, auto and bike taxi, due to which it can give a tough competition to the existing ride-hailing services.
