Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi has approached the Delhi High Court for the protection of his personality rights. The actor has filed a Public Interest Law (PIL) petition regarding the use of his image, identity and voice without permission. The petition has been filed on behalf of his lawyer Sana Raees Khan.

Actor took steps to protect personality rights

The actor told the court that his name, picture, voice and identity were being used without permission on many digital platforms and websites. They say that such use is not only taking commercial advantage but also damaging their public image. Vivek clarified that despite being a public figure, the first and legal right on his identity is his, and no person or organization can use it without his permission.

The petition states that today it has become easy to distort the image of any celebrity through Artificial Intelligence, Deepfake technology and digital advertisements. If this is not stopped in time, it can cause serious damage at the economic, social and mental levels.

Vivek Oberoi has urged the court to protect his personality rights and stop any unauthorized use in future. He also clarified that his petition is not against the freedom of creative expression or journalism. Their sole aim is to ensure that their identity is used only with their explicit consent, whether for advertising, promotion or digital content.

Advocate Sana Rais Khan argued in the court that personality rights are to the dignity and privacy of the individual under Indian law. Taking advantage of a celebrity’s popularity to make a profit is illegal and needs to be stopped. He said that if the court does not give clear guidelines, this problem may become more serious in future. It is noteworthy that in recent years, many Indian artists and public figures have taken the help of court to protect their personality rights. This issue is becoming increasingly serious and challenging due to the increasing influence of digital platforms.
