A UK rail company has revealed new details of 10 upcoming "state-of-the-art" trains. London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said travellers on the East Coast Main Line network will benefit from a "new generation of comfort and speed" on the sleek intercity trains.
LNER has also released new interior images of the trains, which it says will deliver "improved journey experiences" for its millions of passengers every year. The modern carriages will be introduced as part of the planned Government-owned Great British Railways (GBR). The Class 897 trains will be the first new fleet introduced as part of GBR and will be named 'Serenza'.
LNER said the name is a hybrid of 'serene' and the Spanish-style suffix '-enza'.
It said this evokes a "feeling of peacefulness and calm, combined with energy, movement, and modernity".
The new Class 897 trains, which will have GBR branding, will also be the first long distance trains in the UK to be tri-mode.
This means they can run on overhead electric power, alongside diesel engines and batteries when there are no overhead wires.
The trains will be made up of 10 carriages, with a total of 569 seats across Standard and First Class, alongside wheelchair spaces with companion seating.
LNER said all travellers will benefit from improved seating, while those in First Class will have recliner seats offering additional comfort.
The enhanced seating includes widened head cushions and new seat pads.
Each seat will have its own plug socket, as well as USB-C ports.
Travellers will also be able to stay hydrated while on the move, with five water refill stations across the trains.
New digital screens are set to be installed in each carriage to keep customers up to date on their journey and in Standard Class, there will be a "new and improved" Café Bar.
LNER said it will be stocked with food and drinks options from local suppliers, while digital menu screens will show what's available in real time.
Other new features include redesigned bike storage areas, improved toilet facilities and mood lighting in First Class.
LNER added that journeys for disabled people are also to be made easier through the introduction of a number of new features, such as redesigned tables and braille seat numbers for those who are visually impaired.
The new trains will replace LNER's InterCity 225 fleet, which is almost 40 years old, and are set to be introduced in the coming years.
