England once again escaped being the victim of an upset in the T20 World Cup. On Sunday (February 8), it won against Nepal by just 4 runs at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. England won the toss and batted first and scored 184 runs at the loss of 7 wickets. In response, Nepal’s team reached 175 runs after losing 6 wickets in 19 overs.
Nepal needed only 10 runs to win in the last over. With set batsman Lokesh Bam at the crease, Nepal’s team seemed to be winning easily but Sam Curran saved England from embarrassment by bowling brilliantly in the 20th over. If England had lost this match, it would not have been the first time that it would have faced upset at the hands of an associate team in the T20 World Cup. England has been the victim of three upsets in the history of this tournament.
In the first match of T20 World Cup 2009, England faced the challenge of Netherlands. The English team was playing this match at home. England was considered victorious even before the match started at the historic Lord’s stadium, but Netherlands surprised world cricket.
The Dutch team won the toss and decided to bowl first and restricted England to a score of 162/5. This was a challenging target at that time but it fell short in front of the courage of the Netherlands. Netherlands registered a sensational win with the help of Tom de Groot’s 49 runs in 30 balls. In this exciting match that lasted till the last ball, the Dutch team won by 4 wickets.
In the 2014 T20 World Cup hosted by Bangladesh, England once again faced the challenge of Netherlands. In this match held in Chittagong, when invited to bat first, Netherlands scored 133 runs after losing 5 wickets in 20 overs. In response, the England team comprising of batsmen like Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler was all out for 88 runs. Mudassar Bukhari and Logan Van Beek tied the knot by taking 3 wickets each.
England won the 2022 T20 World Cup title but had to suffer a humiliating defeat at the hands of Ireland in the 20th match of the tournament. Ireland scored 157 runs losing all wickets in 19.2 overs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The English team, which came to chase the target, lost 5 wickets while reaching 86 runs.
Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone were trying to manage his innings, when the rain came. After 14.3 overs, England’s score was 105/5. According to DLS method, England team was behind by 5 runs. Rain continued to play havoc and they suffered defeat against yet another European team. It is worth noting that in the history of T20 World Cup, the England team has never been able to defeat any European team.
