Ever since the announcement of Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming film ‘Ghushkhor Pandit’, its name was in constant controversy. There was strong opposition to the use of the word ‘Pandit’ in the title of the film, after which the matter reached the Delhi High Court. Now a big update has come out on this controversy. OTT platform Netflix has informed the court that the makers of the film have decided to change its name.

Court settles ‘Bribery Pandit’ case

The petition demanding a ban on the release and online streaming of ‘Ghooshkhor Pandit’ was heard in the Delhi High Court. It was argued on behalf of the petitioner that the title and proposed content of the film is defamatory and communally objectionable. Meanwhile, Netflix told the court that the makers are ready to change the title of the film. Along with this, it was also clarified that all the promotional content to the film has already been removed from social media platforms. After this information the court settled the case.

The name of the film is being changed

Taking on record Netflix’s assurance, a single judge bench of Justice Purushendra Kumar Kaurav said that when the name of the film is being changed and the promotional material has been removed, there is no need to pass any further order on the petition. On this basis the petition was disposed of. The petition alleged that the title ‘Ghooshkhor Pandit’ harms the image of Hindu priests and a particular community and can create social and communal tension. The petitioner had demanded an immediate ban on the release and streaming of the film.

Controversy over the title of ‘Bribery Pandit’

In this case, Advocate Vineet Jindal had challenged the release of the film. He said that the name of the film is defamatory and communally objectionable. He alleged that the word ‘Pandit’ has been deliberately associated with corruption and bribery, thereby hurting the reputation of the Brahmin community. At the same time, another petitioner Mahendra Chaturvedi had also said that the word ‘Pandit’ is historically, culturally and religiously a symbol of scholarship, moral conduct and spiritual guidance, but the entire community has been defamed through the title of the film.

Manoj Bajpayee’s film will come with a new name

Manoj Bajpayee will be seen in the lead role in this film produced by Neeraj Pandey. Along with him, Divya Dutta, Nusrat Bharucha, Saqib Saleem, Shraddha Das, Akshay Oberoi and Kiku Sharda will also be seen playing important roles. Manoj Bajpayee is playing the role of a bribed police officer in the film. This film is to be released on the OTT platform Netflix, although now it will be presented to the audience with a new name.
