Shooting – At least ten people have died, including the suspected gunman, after a shooting at a secondary school in the northern British Columbia community of Tumbler Ridge. Authorities say several others were injured in the incident, which unfolded on Tuesday local time and has left the small town reeling.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered six victims deceased inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Another individual succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. Police later confirmed that the suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene from what investigators described as a self-inflicted injury.
Emergency crews quickly secured the area and began assisting the wounded. Those injured received immediate medical attention before being taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Officials have not yet disclosed the number of people hospitalized or the severity of their injuries.
Investigators also located two more bodies at a residence in Tumbler Ridge. Police believe the deaths at the home are connected to the school shooting, though they have not provided details on how the incidents are related. Officers continue to examine both scenes as part of a broader investigation.
Authorities have not released the name of the suspect or provided information about a possible motive. The RCMP stated that determining the cause and sequence of events remains a priority as detectives gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
Local Member of the Legislative Assembly Larry Neufeld addressed the tragedy in a statement shared on social media platform X. He said he is closely following developments after what he described as a deeply distressing event at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
Neufeld acknowledged that police have confirmed multiple victims and noted that the active shooter alert issued earlier in the day has since been lifted. However, he emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
He thanked first responders, school staff, and municipal officials for their prompt action during what he called an extraordinarily difficult situation. The MLA said his thoughts are with students, families, educators, and residents across the community.
Tumbler Ridge, a town known for its close-knit population, has been profoundly affected by the violence. Neufeld urged residents to allow law enforcement the necessary time to complete their work and verify facts before drawing conclusions. He added that he would continue sharing confirmed updates as they become available.
Police have refrained from commenting on possible motives or background information related to the suspect. Investigators are working to reconstruct the timeline of events, review surveillance footage, and interview individuals who may have witnessed the shooting.
Counseling and support services are expected to be made available to students, staff, and families coping with the aftermath. Local officials have encouraged residents experiencing distress to seek assistance and to remain patient as authorities work through the details.
The tragedy has prompted renewed concern about school safety and community security in the region. For now, law enforcement agencies remain focused on confirming the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that accurate information is provided to the public.
Further updates are anticipated as investigators continue their work.
