An incident came to light from Tamad, a rural area of Ranchi, which exposed layers of relationships. Here the alleged illicit love affair ended in murder. It is alleged that 35-year-old Geeta Devi, along with her husband Baldev Machhuwa, killed her own lover brother-in-law Shankar Nayak by mixing poison in tea. This case is of Lodhama village of Tamar police station area. Police have arrested both the accused and sent them to judicial custody.
According to the police, deceased Shankar Nayak was in a love affair with his cousin sister-in-law Geeta Devi for the last three years. After the death of Shankar's parents, Geeta took care of the household chores. During this time the closeness between the two increased. Investigating officers say that the relationship started deteriorating when Shankar fixed the marriage at another place. When Geeta Devi came to know about this, she reportedly became angry. Police claim that after this a conspiracy was hatched to remove Shankar from the way.
According to the police, as per the plan, Shankar was called to the house on the pretext of drinking tea. It is alleged that poison was mixed in the tea. When his condition worsened, he was taken to Jamshedpur hospital for treatment, where he died during treatment. The process of postmortem report and forensic investigation is ongoing. Police have said that the type of poison and all aspects of the conspiracy are being scientifically investigated.
An FIR was registered at Tamad police station on the complaint of the deceased's brother Sukra Nayak. A special team was formed under the leadership of Bundu SDPO. Police arrested Geeta Devi and her husband Baldev Machhuwa on the basis of call detail records, mobile location and other technical evidence. The name of the couple's minor daughter is also included in the complaint. However, the police have clarified that the role of the minor is being investigated separately and action will be taken in his regard under the Juvenile Justice Act.
The surprising thing is that just 48 hours before this incident, a heart-wrenching incident had also come to light in Sonahatu police station area. There, 25-year-old Harihar Mahato was murdered by his alleged girlfriend Sulochana and her husband. According to the police, after the murder, the body was brutalized and thrown on the river bank.
Two consecutive murders have raised serious questions about crimes related to illicit relations in rural areas of Ranchi. Police officials say that family and social disputes are now often turning violent, which is becoming a challenge to law and order.
According to legal experts, sections 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code are applicable in such cases. If proven guilty, there is a provision for life imprisonment or harsh punishment for the accused. Social analysts believe that the complex mix of family structure, social pressure and personal relationship conflicts in rural society sometimes gives rise to such crimes. However, violence or murder cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Police say that the matter is being investigated in a multi-level manner. The nature of the poison, the timeline of the conspiracy, and the role of other possible accomplices are being investigated. The officials have assured that all the facts will be presented before the court.
