It's no secret that the cost of living has rocketed for people in recent years, which is perhaps why some have decided to pack their suitcases and move abroad. However, one expat has shared the amount she spends on bills in Spain, and the cost of living has left people totally floored.
Georgia, known as geoinspain on TikTok, started documenting her adventures online after she decided to ditch the UK to set up a life in a new country. While so many things may be on her side, she admitted she was taken aback when she was handed a recent energy bill.
It's not the first time someone has decided to set up a new life abroad either. Just weeks ago, it was revealed Brits are moving to another gorgeous country in a bid to try and beat the cost of living.
Alongside the video, she wrote: "You’re not going to believe the electric bill I’ve received living in Spain this month! This is the first time since moving to Malaga that I’ve received one like this."
Georgia then detailed what happened in the video, explaining: "Do you want to see my electricity bill for this month? Because I am actually in shock.
"So, for those who don't know, I live in Spain and I actually did make a video before about previous electricity bills that I've got. I don't know what's happened, because this electricity bill is from December 20 until January 23, if I'm not wrong.
"Bearing in mind that we were away for one week for Christmas, so we weren't even in the house, and I'm just going to add the fact that we don't have central heating. We've literally just been using these plug-in heaters.
"One plug-in heater at night-time on a very low temperature on a timer, so not even all night, because heat and the air conditioning (AC) doesn't really work very well."
She then revealed her bill, which was €166.87, which works out at around £145.44. She questioned how this was possible as, previously, she's been charged around €70.00 per month, which is considerably cheaper.
Georgia said it "doesn't make sense", and she questioned how it's become so expensive. She said she's "never" received an electricity bill that high, but Brits had a lot to say about the confession.
Hundreds of people commented on the video after it was shared, and they were quick to offer their thoughts too. All sorts of ideas were posted about the situation, but it's clear Brits where shocked at how cheap the rates are.
One said: "This is nothing!" Another added: "That’s not expensive compared to England!"
A third replied: "Umm, and you’re saying that’s expensive?? Try living in London." Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: "While in the UK I’m paying £100 weekly."
Some agreed that they've noticed increases in Spain though, with one writing: "Yeah!! Me too!! 43% more!!" Another noted: "Must say mine is very high. I have been here 20 years and never had a bill this high."
One more also added: "Very similar to us for our holiday apartment in Alicante. Our usual monthly bill is €50 (typically 50% monthly occupancy), but from December to January (bill received yesterday) it was €120. No use of AC, just a couple of plug-ins like you. Changed supplier yesterday to someone offering a 21% saving, but let's see."
What is the cost of living like in Spain?According to reports, it is generally cheaper to live in Spain than in the UK, as overall consumer prices are lower by around 18% to 20%. It's particularly thought to be cheaper when it comes to things like housing, food, utilities and transportation.
Despite this, taxes and specific expat products can vary. Many tend to find big savings in rent, as this is often around 25% to 30% less. It's also said to be more reasonable to eat out and use public transport.
When it comes to prices of basic utility bills, such as electricity, heating, cooling, water and internet, these things are generally around 40% lower in Spain. However, as Georgia points out, you also have to bear in mind that salaries are generally lower in Spain.
In fact, they are usually lower than other parts of Northern and Western Europe, often falling around 15% to 20% below the EU average. There are also various steps you need to take to buy property in Spain.
