A stunning little village tucked away in a Buckinghamshire valley is so picturesque that it's popular with film directors. Hambleden has repeatedly drawn television and film production teams to its breathtaking vistas and traditional English charm. The Telegraph included it among England's 30 most spectacular villages as recently as 2022. It's even been home to some famous faces lured in by its unique appeal.
This picture-postcard British village offers an enchanting break from today's fast-paced world. In Hambleden, you'll encounter the village's multipurpose gem - a quaint store that's a post office, cafe, and village shop rolled into one. Positioned at Hambleden's heart sits gastropub and boutique inn, The Stag and Huntsman. Familiar to some yet unknown to many, Hambleden has graced our screens as the backdrop for big Hollywood movies and TV series. It provided the setting for films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Avengers, 101 Dalmations, Into the Woods and Nanny McPhee Returns, as well as TV series including Agatha Christie's Poirot, and Amazon's mini-series Good Omens, starring David Tennant.
Most recently, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams were spotted in the village during filming of Disney's 2022 sequel to Enchanted. Among the renowned directors who have selected Hambleden as a filming location, Tim Burton is perhaps the most famous.
He chose the village as the setting for his horror film Sleepy Hollow, featuring Johnny Depp.
But take a stroll outside Hambleden, and the valley offers even more delights for explorers. The terrain of Culden Faw Estate encompasses 3,500 acres of established beech woodland, parkland, and rolling chalk downs. The estate encompasses the settlement within its idyllic setting.
Those with refined tastes will discover the Chiltern Valley Winery and Brewery, a distinguished holder of the Travellers' Choice Award. Visitors can enjoy a captivating journey through the vineyard whilst sampling an expanding selection of vintages.
At the neighbouring Cliveden House, guests can enter a realm formerly occupied by society's most powerful figures. Renowned for its distinguished visitors and infamous for generations of scandalous gossip and extravagant festivities, Cliveden has stood since 1666.
To get to Hambleden, you can hop on a train from London Paddington to Reading, then catch a bus straight to the village. Alternatively, if you fancy a picturesque drive out of London, it'll take roughly an hour and 20 minutes.
