Google Maps has gone from a struggling startup to the world’s largest navigation platform in 21 years. With interactive map technology, constant upgrades and a strong revenue model, the platform has become a major source of revenue for Alphabet today, running into thousands of crores of rupees.

Google Maps, the world’s most popular navigation platform, has completed 21 years today. It originated from an Australian startup called Where2, founded by brothers Lars and Jens Rasmussen. Google acquired the startup during a funding crisis and launched it as a browser-based map in 2005. The addition of interactive maps, satellite imagery and later mobile, GPS and AI features made it a global necessity.

Google Maps was pioneered by Where2, at that time static maps like MapQuest were common, however Where2 introduced the concept of interactive and draggable maps. The initial product Expedition was a desktop application that had to be downloaded.

After the funding stopped, the startup fell into crisis. Meanwhile, Google co-founder Larry Page noticed this technology. Google bought Where2 and turned it into a browser-based platform, which later became the basis for Google Maps.

Leaks of Google Maps before the official launch in 2005 introduced users to smooth and draggable digital maps for the first time. Later it added features like satellite imagery, location layers and a developer API.

Mobile app, real-time traffic, GPS navigation and AI-based route optimization make Google Maps an essential tool for everyday use. By 2006, it had become the world’s largest map provider and continues to do so today thanks to its vast array of technology and data.

Google Maps is no longer just a navigation app but a stable revenue platform. According to reports, its revenue was around $3 billion in 2019, which will increase to $11 billion by 2023.

A major part of the revenue comes from advertising. Companies pay for ads, promoted pins and sponsored results to appear on Maps. In addition, developers and businesses are charged fees for using the Google Maps API and location services, making the platform financially stronger.
