What an absolute classic! South Africa and Afghanistan just gave us one of the wildest matches in T20 World Cup history. After 40 overs of non-stop drama, both teams finished locked at 187 runs each. It took not one, but two Super Overs to finally separate them. South Africa came out on top in the second tie-breaker, winning by 4 runs. Pure edge-of-the-seat stuff.
Afghanistan won the toss and asked South Africa to bat. Early trouble came when captain Aiden Markram fell cheaply. But Quinton de Kock (59 off 41) and Ryan Rickelton (61 off 28) took over with a massive 114-run stand. South Africa raced to 124/1 after 12 overs and looked set for 200+.
Then Rashid Khan flipped the script. In one over he dismissed both set batters. Azmatullah Omarzai (3/41) controlled the death overs. Late hitting from David Miller and Marco Jansen took South Africa to 187/6.
Afghanistan’s chase was carried by Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s brilliant 84 off 42 balls. Lungi Ngidi (3/26) kept picking wickets. The last over was chaos—13 needed, Noor Ahmad smashed a six off Kagiso Rabada, but Farooqi was run out on the final ball. Scores level. Super Over time!
First Super Over Afghanistan batted first and made 17/0. Omarzai smashed Ngidi. South Africa replied with 17/1—Tristan Stubbs hit a flat six off the last ball from Farooqi to tie it again.
Second Super Over South Africa batted first. Miller and Stubbs went wild against Omarzai, scoring 23/0. Afghanistan needed 24. Gurbaz smashed three sixes off Keshav Maharaj, but on the final ball Maharaj bowled wide and Gurbaz was caught at backward point. South Africa won by 4 runs.
