Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus has questioned the International Cricket Council (ICC) for not allocating a single night training session for the African team ahead of the team’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match against India in New Delhi on Thursday.
Erasmus looked upset by what he felt was an unfair advantage given to the opposition, as India had been granted two sessions under the floodlights.
Speaking at the pre-match presser, Erasmus revealed that Namibia had not been allocated a single night training session, while India will train twice at night.
“We haven’t had a night training session before this game. I’m not sure why. I believe India has had two night sessions. You can make of that what you want,” Erasmus said.
Erasmus was aggrieved as the concern is particularly significant for Namibia due to their limited experience of playing under lights back home.
“We don’t have floodlights back home in Namibia, so we don’t really play day-night or night games,” the captain said.
Namibia don’t have many players who ply their trade in foreign leagues. Those who play overseas cricket have only participated in franchise tournaments like the Nepal Premier League and the ILT20. On the international stage, their experience of playing under floodlights is limited to the previous World Cups.
Keeping the challenges aside, an unpretentious Erasmus is eager not to let the circumstances affect the team’s morale. Inspired by the spirited performances from associate nations like the USA, the Netherlands and Nepal, Erasmus is confident of a strong display.
“We’ll just rock up and do it the Namibian way – which is to fight,” he declared.
With nothing to lose, Namibia would aim to take advantage of every little opportunity against the defending champions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The African side desperately needs a win after losing the opener to the Netherlands.
