New Delhi:Real Madrid and UEFA have reached an agreement to end the legal battle over the ill-fated Super League, the club and European soccer’s governing body announced on Wednesday, February 11.

Madrid had been in conflict with UEFA since the unveiling of the Super League project in 2021, taking legal action against the European football governing body, saying that it was an unlawful attempt to stop the launch of the rogue competition.

UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC) and Real Madrid reached an “agreement of principles” to end the Super League project after months of talks, saying that the move is for the good of European club football.

“Following months of discussions conducted in the best interests of European football, UEFA, European Football Clubs (EFC), and Real Madrid CF announce that they have reached an agreement of principles for the well-being of European club football,” Real Madrid and UEFA said in a released statement.

“This agreement of principles will also serve to resolve their legal disputes related to the European Super League, once such principles are executed and implemented,” the statement added.

Real Madrid and 12 other European clubs backed the Super League competition in 2021 before the support for the controversial tournament collapsed after pressure from fans and governments.

After which, the few clubs backed out, including six Premier League teams. But Real Madrid and Barcelona still backed the project, which threatened to rival UEFA’s Champions League (UCL).

Barcelona officially pulled out of the project last week, leaving Real Madrid as the only club in the competition. The organisers also tried to revive the project in December 2024 with a new concept, featuring 96 clubs split into four leagues. But it also failed to get significant support.
