Mahashivratri holds immense significance in Hindu culture. While Shivaratri is celebrated monthly, the one that occurs on the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha in Phalgun is particularly revered. This day marks the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, making it exceptionally sacred. Devotees believe that fasting and worshipping Lord Shiva with sincerity on this day can lead to the fulfillment of their desires. The Shiva Purana emphasizes that offering water to the Shivalinga and performing rituals with devotion can earn Lord Shiva's blessings for happiness and prosperity.
Guidelines on Fasting
According to Pandit Mudgal, certain groups should refrain from fasting. Children under eight years old are advised against it for health reasons. Additionally, the elderly, those with serious health conditions, pregnant women, and menstruating women should also avoid fasting. These individuals are encouraged to focus on their health and can still participate in worship with devotion. Importantly, no one is outright banned from observing Mahashivratri.
