Tucked away in the East Riding of Yorkshire lies a picturesque village, positioned near some of the county's most breathtaking scenery.

The village is home to the Bishop Wilton Wold, renowned as the highest point within the Wolds, reaching an elevation of approximately 248m.

The peak is called Garrowby Hill and features a trig point where enthusiastic ramblers can snap their photograph after reaching this modest achievement at the summit.

In 1944 the hill acquired additional, tragic, importance when an RAF aircraft crashed at the location, claiming the lives of seven aircrew members and a passing lorry driver.

To honour their memory, a memorial was erected on the hill, which is visited by many on their journeys through the Wolds.

Contributing to its serene atmosphere, the village boasts a gentle stream meandering through its heart and an expansive green space, alongside a charming school, church and humble pub.

Yet it's the striking hill that truly catapulted this location into the spotlight, and understandably so.

Renowned English artist David Hockney, on returning to Yorkshire from Los Angeles, found himself captivated by this location, so profoundly that he painted the views within his artwork.

His 1998 masterpiece, Garrowby Hill, stands as a large-scale work that ranks amongst his most celebrated pieces, perfectly encapsulating the majesty of this elevated position within the Yorkshire Wolds.

For those determined to tackle the complete Yorkshire Wolds Way trail, it presents quite a challenge and demands roughly a week to finish. However, based on TripAdvisor testimonials, it's an expedition well worth undertaking.

One walker said: "Such a lovely part of the world and a brilliant area to enjoy country walks! Plenty on offer and so many friendly people! We love it!".

Another reviewer shared: "There is excellent walking to be had in a very rural area, and often you will have the whole area to yourself. Most of the walks can be undertaken as linear walks, but some were done as circular."

"Lovely setting at the bar and the dining room too. If you are passing by near at hand do take a turning to spend some time there and you will be impressed."

Another wonderful spot to rest weary legs is the Bishop Wilton Community Shop and Cafe, which functions as a local gathering place for purchasing fresh goods and enjoying a proper brew. What's more, it has an extraordinarily heartwarming backstory, with community spirit at its very core.

When the shop was threatened with closure, a dedicated group of locals mobilised support through fundraising and volunteer efforts to ensure it stayed open. Several years on, following considerable dedication, it successfully reopened and has continued to be a cherished fixture in Bishop Wilton village life ever since.
